One reason...

...it might have been good to have a boy:

I might actually know what to get a 9 year old boy for his birthday.

Yeah.

I walked around the toy section last night without a single idea as to what would be good. I saw all kinds of things...but had no clue if a 9 year old boy would like action figures...or legos...or racecars...or whatever.

I left without getting anything and called Ryun this morning to ask him what he thought. He said legos are a sure bet and when I asked if he played with legos when he was 9 he told me he played with them until he was 18. So I told him that he was not typical and I needed to ask someone else, LOL.

So I'm asking you...as in the readers...are legos a good gift for a 9 year old boy? What would you want if you were a 9 year old boy?

  1. I would get racecars...they always love them...when they are little when theyare getting bi and when they are 16 they want to drive one;)

  2. I dunno, I remember my brother playing with Legos from age 5 all the way through at least 15 . . . and I had a lot of fun with them too, for that matter.

Of course, they're probably not so fun when you're the person who has to clean up after them.

  4. LOL Actually, Ryun saved all of his legos from when he was a kid...and every once in a while brings them out and plays with Emily and Katherine with them. I was kind of making fun of him when I made the comment about being 18 but let me tell you, when he has brought them out for the girls, I have joined in too! They are fun!

  5. Yes. Legos are always ideal for a wide range of ages, and not just boys.

The cool thing about people giving them as gifts is they are expensive and that adds to a collections without the parents having to spend the money or work hard to get all the exotic themed mini sets that make the collection disproportionately more interesting.

It's also probably a good age for walkie-talkies. I'd say it's about the top of the age range for, say, good Tonka trucks. Cars are always good for a wide range of ages, and a 9 year old is going to be a good age to really appreciated Hot Wheels or similar sets or the cars for them. It depends on the kid and should probably come from family, but it's the right age for a jackknife, if the kid didn't start learning to safely own and use one earlier. I'd say it's around the beginning of the age range to introduce models; as in model cars or such that you have to build with some care. I was somewhat interested in tools by then. Books of an appropriate age might work. Certain games. And I had something else in mind after cars and forgot. Some of it's going to depend on the interests of the kids. 9 year old Adam would have loved a ball, bat, glove... me not so much, though I'd have accepted them in the spirit offered. I think I had a slingshot at that age, but probably those aren't available anymore.

Still, Legos are a constant. Can't get much safer.

  7. Lego's are always good.. But at 9 I would say you really can't loose with any of them..
I think I played with lego's into my mid 20's LOL
also if your in a bind you can buy them TRU gift cards..
Kids love to go and pick something out and most of the time they want something more then whats on the gift card so the parents end up pitching in more.. LOL
