Today: go to my parents and swim all day with the kids (it is supposed to clear up for the afternoon).
Tonight: Middleboro Carnival and Fireworks
Saturday: Annual 4th of July cookout at the Simmons house
Sunday: Joshua's birthday party
Monday: hang around the house do yardwork etc.
Tuesday: Happy 4th! Head to Marie and Pete's for the day, swim.
Tuesday night: pack. Normally, we would head to Plymouth for the fireworks, but, we are going to see fireworks tonight and we don't want to be out too late Tuesday.
Wednesday-Friday: Emily's overnight EEG...coming home either Thursday or Friday depending on results.
Saturday: Ryun's cousin's birthday party and Katherine's friend Alexis' birthday party.
Sunday: Nephew's first birthday party.
So, obviously we have a busy couple of weeks or so. Y'all know that I will probably be back here more often than I think I will but I wanted to say, just to cover my own but, blogging may be light!

Thursday Afternoon Bitch Session: Volume 1
So, Julia had an appointment at the EI office this morning for PT. The appointment was at 10, which means I needed to have all kids fed, dressed, hair done, and in the car by 9:20 (to allow a few extra minutes to run through the Dunkin Donuts drive through).
I did it, which you know, isn't really a big deal but it's not always the easiest thing in the world to do.
So we got there.
And we waited.
At 10:15 I still wasn't too worried. She is always late.
At 10:30, the secretary answers the phone and says, "You have someone waiting in the office for you."
"oh great," I think. "She flippin' forgot."
So the secretary hands me the phone and I talk to her and she apologizes up and down saying she forgot to write our appointment in her book. Me being me, I of course say it's ok, don't worry about it, and call me later to reschedule.
Diplomacy is a wonderful thing.
What was I really thinking?
Something along the lines of, "You forgot to write it in your book? I just got up to an alarm on a day that I didn't have to, got all my kids dressed, ready for the day and out of the house at 9:30 for nothing? And let's talk about the gas prices, hmm? I just drove an hour (1/2 hour each way) for fucking nothing? And why the hell can't you ever be on time?"
But you know, I was nice, as usual.
Sometimes, I think that this is a down fall of mine. I am too nice and sometimes, it comes back to bite me in the ass.
Oh and since I am already in a mood I freakin' HATE when people think yield means stop. You don't stop on the god damn ramp getting on the highway. You just don't.

Ryun...You Just Gotta Love Him
Well you don't but I do!
Ryun: "I hope to live to 100."
Me: "What? 100? Well, in that case, I hope I die at 80."
Ryun: "Yeah, I hope you do too!"

Blogging Material
One of the many great things about having kids and being part of a family?
They make for great blogging fodder.
Take for example last night. Katherine was done with her dinner and doing her usual "after dinner silliness" which consists of turning the key board on full blast and dancing around the kitchen to, "La Cucaracha." She did this one night and now, has done it almost every night since, probably for about 6 months or so.
She's just so damn silly we are all in hysterics by the time she's done.
Emily was still finishing up her dinner, but she looked at me and said rather matter of factly while shaking her head, "This never get's old."
As I've said before, it's not always what Emily says (chances are she has heard someone say that before) it's how she knows exactly when to say it.
She's an old soul.

Things I Need To Do With This Blog
...update the blogroll again. It seems I am always adding to the list of blogs I read...I probably have about 5 more that I need to add at this point.
...customize it a bit more, maybe liven it up with a little more color or something.
...link my new scrappin' blog that I started.
...find out how the hell trackbacks work? Anyone? Like I said before I understand the concept, just don't know how to make it actually happen. Help?

What did Katherine learn in kindergarten this year?
Why I am so glad you asked.
The video is a bit dark and she got cut off right and the end but it's cute nonetheless.

Well, part of the song anyway.
Oh, and that's a tatoo of lips on the side of her face, just in case you were wondering!

This One's For You Grandpa Marshall
So, seemingly out of the blue, Ryun has turned in to a "baseball nut." I mean, in recent years, he's really come to like it but, lately, it's become somewhat of an obsession.
So a couple of games ago (one of the one's in which Big Papi hit the game winning run in...which yeah, I know, it may be hard to remember which one since he's been making a practice of that lately)I taught her how to chant in time, "Papi, Papi, Papi." I also taught her how to say, "YAY Baseball!" We're working on "Go Sox" and she almost has it mastered.
Needless to say, Ryun is very proud, and I figured it would be pleasing to Grandpa too, hence the title of this post.
On an unrelated note, Emily and Katherine just taught her how to say, "STOP, NOW!"

Can Someone...
...explain the whole "trackback thing" to me?
I understand the concept but I don't understand how to do it.
Like say Joe Schmoe over at Blah Blah Blah Blog writes this astounding entry that I want to share with the world (or, um the readers of my blog anyway)how can I add a trackback that will appear on his site in his trackback count?
Sorry y'all, I just have no clue about some of these things!

Tomorrow...
...June 29, 2006 is the two year anniversary of Emily's first ever known seizure.
It really doesn't seem possible that it has been two years, but, you know what they say about how fast time passes.

More Information...
...regarding services for Rob.
(copied directly from Gut Rumbles).
Because the comments here have become so extensive, there is information in them that folks might appreciate, but will have trouble finding, so I'm going to pull some of it out here.
* There will be a memorial service for Rob at 4 pm on Thursday, June 29th, at Fox & Weeks on Hodgson Memorial Drive in Savannah, followed by a gathering of friends and family to celebrate Rob's life.
* In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Diabetes Association, 5105 Paulsen St., Suite C-236, Savannah, GA 31405.
* Rob's obituary is online at the Fox and Week site, and there is a guestbook and email address there for condolences.
* It was Rob's expressly stated wish that Gut Rumbles remain online, and I will see to it that his legacy is preserved.
A previous entry mentioned that some sort of online memorial was being planned, which I am anxious to hear the details of as I obviously, will not be able to make the trip to Savannah.
I don't know why this is so strange feeling. I guess it's because I have never actually met Rob in person that I am feeling weird about "how I feel."
Like many, I am mourning someone I have never met, but who's writing and passing have influenced me in ways I was never expecting.
If you are interested in hearing a sample of Rob's music (both guitar and voice) click here.

...but after my last post about what a good listener I am, I noticed that my post count was at 666, and I thought, "I better add another entry."
So here I am, to update y'all regarding Julia's previously mentioned appointment.
First off, let me just tell you how wonderful her developmental pediatrician is. She's so...you know, down to earth. She has a way of putting you totally at ease and, as she well should be, is very good with children.
Anyway, the appointment itself went well. As I suspected, she re-assesed Julia, doing some of the same things she did with Julia 6 months ago. The only difference between this time and last? Julia "passed" with flying colors. She negotiated a shape sorting puzzle better than I think a 3 year old would, built a tower of blocks 4 high, and put every peg in it's correct spot on the peg board. She was quite verbal and very interactive with the doctor (after she got over the fact that I had the nerve to take her out of the waiting room and all the toys out there).
While Dr. B was impressed with her progress, she, like me, feels that Julia will still benefit from continued services through EI and Health South. She told me that, if when Julia's assesment comes up they decide to "kick her to the curb" to call her and she will get in touch with them and tell them why she thinks Julia still needs the "extra help."
So that's it. Emily and Katherine were awesome...a big help in encouraging Julia to "perform." Emily even sang to her when she was upset about something, and Julia calmed right down.
I don't want to jinx myself so I won't say anything like, "I can't believe how well Emily and Katherine have been getting along" or "how fabulously they have been behaving at our various outings."
No, I won't say anything like that.

Follow-Up
Today is Julia's follow-up appointment with the developmental pediatrician we saw back in December, the pediatrician that ordered Julia's MRI and EEG, and the one that did all of the genetic testing.
I am not exactly sure what will happen at the appointment. She really wanted to see Julia again to just check in on her progress, but I am thinking she may re-assess her to see where she's at now. We will, no doubt, talk about the over night EEG (which BTW, is in the process of being scheduled).
Anwyay, I will be back later to update when we get back.

Well...
...this was the last thing I expected to read when I went online earlier.
Not that you ever expect that sort of thing.
I am what I would call a "newer reader" of Rob's, only having started a couple of years ago, when I discovered that Ryun's Uncle had a blog. Rob, aka Acidman was on his blogroll, and not too long after that, he was added to mine.
I read Rob everyday, sometimes more than once. While I didn't always agree with what he had to say, I always found his posts interesting and well written.
His absence in the blogosphere will be felt far and wide.
Rest in peace, Rob.

Today
Julia had PT at Health South this morning. Obviously, I brought Emily and Katherine with me and the behaved fabulously in the waiting room. I bought them each a new package of crayons and a coloring book, as well as markers and a sketch book to bring with us so that they would have something to do, and apparently, that was a good idea on my part. They sat at the little table and colored the hour away.
Julia did very well today too! They have a small set of stairs that you can flip over and it looks like a boat, (kind of hard to explain). The boat rocks and the idea is to get Julia to walk over it, while maintaining her balance. Deb said she did very well, with Deb's hand just under her elbow to guide her(or catch her if she did fall). She also had fun on the gym mats, walking all over them (even the uneven ones, stepping up and down over).I have a sneaking suspicion that we won't be seeing much more of Deb which is sad because we really love her, but good, because obviously it means progress on Julia's part.
After we left PT, I took the kids to the library to register them for the "What's Buzzin' At The Library" Summer Reading Program. They were very excited about registering (even Katherine has caught the reading bug!) and it will be fun for them. Basically, we will be keeping a reading log at home and after a certain amount of hours they will get a prize. There are various shows throughout the summer that we will go see and at the end of August there will be a party and prizes awarded.
I took them to McD's for lunch which was a special treat for them as we haven't done something like that in quite some time. Julia is in for a nap and Emily and Katherine are chillin' in the livingroom.
Me? I am going to organize my desk, fill out the camp forms and print out a calendar.
FUN!

The Brockton Rox Rock!
Last night, Emily, Katherine, Ryun and I went to see the Brockton Rox. The Middleboro PTA sponsored the event as a fundraiser and apparently it was very successful because so many tickets were purchased that they had to offer a second game on Sunday.
We were lucky last night. There was a brief shower about 1/2 hour before the game started but the rain held off for the rest of the night, including during the post game fireworks show.
I was a great night. The kids were a little over tired after having a really late night with Annie on Wednesday and staying up for the DCOM (Disney Channel Original Movie) on Thursday, so they were a little out of sorts. Overall though, they weren't too bad though. It was a fairly inexpensive night ($20.00 for all four of us to go and just what we spent on the concessions) and so worth it because of the family type atmosphere and "fun" the Rox staff provide. In between each inning they have some sort of fun, interactive audience type game. They give out prizes and have the team mascot (K O) going throughout the stands to take pictures with the fans.
Speaking of pictures...

Classic Emily
Emily and Katherine were in the livingroom rough housing.
Me (yelling in from the kitchen): "SIT DOWN!"
Emily: "WE ARE."
Me: No you're not.
Emily: "That eyes in the back of the head thing really freaks me out."
See what I have to look forward to?!?! A summer full of ""Emilyisms!"
LOL.
Oh, and by the way, she is so Ryun's daughter sometimes, it's scary!

The Report Card Report
Emily and Katherine got their report cards yesterday. They both did very well!
Emily basically stayed the same in everything (mostly 3's which means better than average progress and 4's which means excellent progress). The only things she got a 2 in (which means average progress so it's not like a 2 is "bad" thing) were some of the Math categories (applies problem solving strategies, and subtraction).
Katherine's report card was most impressive. She went up in 11 areas including, Math and some of the various math categories, Science, and many of her "Successful Social Behaviors" such as works well independently, follows directions, organizes and uses materials appropriately and practices self control.
They got their teacher assignments for next year and they seem pleased. I have not ever heard anything about Emily's teacher but Katherine's is reported to be very good, so we'll see.
I can't believe Katherine is going to be in first grade next year and is moving up to the big school.
Where does the time go?

Emily...
...is definitely her Grandmother's (my mother's) granddaughter.
She just said, on this her last day of 3rd grade...
"I am so wearing a dress on the first day of fourth grade."
Yeah, Mom, you should be proud. She is planning her outfit 3 months in advance!
LOL.

Today is...
...Emily and Katherine's last day of school.
I probably don't even have to tell you how emotional a day this has been for me. It always is.
I find myself reflecting on the year gone by...
Remember the Survival Kits I made for Emily and Katherine in the beginning of the year?
9/6/05
I decided earlier last week to make the kids "Back To School Survival Kits". I saw the idea somewhere (maybe Family Fun?) and thought it would be a great idea.
Here is what I included in them and why...
TOOTHPICK: To remind you to pick the good qualities in everyone, including yourself.
RUBBER BAND: To remind you to be flexible. Things may not always go the way you want, but it can be worked out.
BAND AID: To remind you to heal hurt feelings, either your's or someone else's.
CANDY KISSES/HUGS: To remind you that everyone needs a hug or a compliment everyday.
BUBBLE GUM: T o remind you to stick with it and you can accomplish anything.
PENCIL: To remind you to list your blessings everyday.
STAR: To remind you to try your best everyday.
TISSUE: To dry your tears.
PENNY: To remind you that you are worthy and valuable.
BOOKMARK: So you never lose your place.
Remember when I said this?
" Two school age kids= ONE HELL OF A LOT OF PAPERWORK! Good heavens, my hand actually hurt after filling all of that out!"
Remember Literacy bags?
And their school pictures?
Remember Movie night and Mardi Gras?
How about MCAS?
And we cant forget Mr. Morris with pink and green hair!
Remember Katherine having a really rough go of it in the begining of the year? How many times did I send her to school in tears?
Remember when I used to read to her?
Funny how we have switched roles like that... I am the one being read to now!
She has come so far.
And Emily?
She didn't even know that a fraction was in September. Now, she's re-teaching me (I never did like Math remember)!
I can't believe that another school year has come and gone, but I can't tell you how forward I am looking to the summer with the kids.
I probably don't even have to tell you how emotional a day this has been for me. It always is.

I stick up my chin, and grin and say....
As mentioned in my previous post, last night, Emily, Katherine, my mother, sister and I went to the Opera House in Boston to see "Annie." It was...well, amazing. The newly restored Opera House is gorgeous beyond words.
Emily and Katherine were completely enthralled with the whole experience. I have never seen Emily so taken by anything, and so grateful to Mimi for such a wonderful Chirstmas present. Katherine was "Ryun's daughter" for the night and was most impressed with the technical end of things (How does that speaker come down? How do they change the lights? Did they build that staircase? Who painted that?).
It really was a great show to take the girls to see...they knew the story and songs before the even got there and that I think, made it an even better experience for them!
Katherine and Emily sitting in the window at the West Street Grille, a very "Boston-like" restaurant we had dinner at before the show.
A picture, stolen from Yahoo Images of the inside of the Opera House. We were about 8 rows back from the stage! The picture doesn't even begin to do the place justice.
Emily and Katherine standing in at one of the many fireplaces located throughout the Opera House.
A close up shot of sisterly bonding.
Aren't their dresses gorgeous, by the way? my mother got those for them for Easter, and last night provided a wonderful opportunity to wear them again!

Tired...
...but, I will have more to say tomorrow, promise.
Went to see Annie tonight at The Opera House with my mother, sister Heather, Emily and Katherine (Mom got us all tickets for Christmas). It was fabulous!
More details, and of course pictures to follow tomorrow!

The Reason
This morning was "one of those mornings" with Emily. Funny thing is, I know exactly why she had a bad start to the day.
A couple of other people might know too, if they really give it some thought.
Anyway, I am still working on a number of different things around here so I doubt I will be around much.
Kids are out of school in two days.
Did this school year go by fast or what?
Yikes.

Nice Day
Today was another nice day at my parents house.
We spent the day out at the pool. It was 90+ degrees here today so the pool was a great place to be! I think Emily got out of the water just once to use the bathroom, and hen to eat dinner. She's a fish that girl, she is. Katherine appears to be getting a bit more brave than she has been in the past. She just walked right in and started playing. It used to be an effort to get her off of the stairs! Julia, once she gets used to it loves the water. It takes her a few minutes to get happy about it, but once she is, she enjoys her self!
Ryun, despite it being Father's Day fixed his car and installed 3 air conditioners in the house today. My parents got central air so they gave us the two they had. We have always had one which we have used in our bedroom. We now have one in the living room, one in the hallway upstairs to air condition the bedrooms up there, and one, of course, in our bedroom.
Speaking of which, I am off to bed! Spending the day in the sun has made me quite tired!

Overdosing On Elmo
It's a sure fire sign that your daughter has been watching too much Elmo when she starts speaking in the third person.
She just walked in to the office and I asked her where her o's were (Cheerios, for those who don't speak toddler).
She said, "Ju-la all done."
LOL.
Then, I asked her where the o's went and she took her finger and stuck it in her mouth.
Could she be any cuter?

Blah
For some reason, I am all out of sorts today. I am cranky and blah and I just found out that I have to go to the mall tonight (which I had planned on doing anyway but was trying to figure a way out of it) and I was almost in tears.
This is not good.
I'm just having a very severe case of "leave me the hell alone world."
Thankfully, for me and those around me, this doesn't happen often.

Julia
This morning, I turned on the Disney Channel at 8 so Julia could watch one of her favorite shows, Little Einsteins. The theme song was playing when I turned it on and Julia said, "baby stein!" It was clear as day and kind of funny that she combined "Baby Einstein" with "Little Einsteins."
I talked yesterday to her PT at EI to find out if she thought Julia would still be eligible for services when her assessment comes up next month. At 24 months, the delay needs to be 6 months, which Julia is sort of teetering on the edge of (at least with the gross motor). Personally, I would like to see her services continue, as I think she really benefits from it and I really think she needs the reinforcement through both EI and Health South. Her PT thought that she more than likely would be eligible, but, that if she had some sort of diagnosis, that her eligibility would be automatic. So, I am really going to get on the ball next week with the neurologist (he's on vacation this week) and get her EEG ordered and scheduled. It's not like I want her to have a diagnosis, but if she has one, I need to let EI know sometime either before or just after her assesment.
The other route would be to have her see a feeding specialist through EI, which, there's absolutely no question she will be eligible for. While we would focus on feeding, EI usually encompasses all areas of development, so there would be a little PT worked in as well.
In the meantime, she really is doing quite well. She is talking more and more everyday. Her newest phrase? "Where go?" which she says while holding her hands up in dismay.
Physically, she really hasn't started anything new, but she is definitely gaining confidence in the abilities she has already mastered, which is good.

Dream Interpretation With Sharon
i don't know how much anyone else buys in to this dream interpretation thing, but let me tell you, after the dreams I have had, I am sold.
The most recent one was last night.
I am standing outside weeding a garden, in bare feet. It was clear in the dream that my feet and the weeds are the focus of my attention. I finish up weeding and walk over to a tree and look up. I see 3 white doves looking down at me. It appears that they are trying to tell me something, but it's sort of like a mind to mind thing...they aren't actually "talking."
What this means:
Weeds: Removal of weeds may suggest removal or clearing of areas of your life that are hindering your progress or well-being.
Feet: To see your own feet in your dream, symbolizes your foundation, stability and sense of understanding. It signifies your need to be more practical and sensible. Keep both feet on the ground. Alternatively, it represents mobility, independence and freedom. Perhaps you have taken a step in the right direction and are contemplating your goals or your next step.
White Doves: To see doves in your dream, symbolizes peace, tranquility, harmony, and innocence. In particular, to see white doves in your dream, symbolizes loyalty and friendships. It may also represent a message and blessing from the Holy Spirit. You have let go of your thoughts of hate and revenge.
You know, I have to admit, the white doves and the interpretation really hit me hard. I can't tell you how much I have been questioning my faith lately, and asking the "why would God do this" question many times. I know this might sound well, insane, but I seriously think God (or the Holy Spirit) was trying to tell me something last night in my dream. Yeah, I know it sounds crazy but I feel it in my gut.

LIke the speed of light...
My kids have only 6 days of school left! I can't believe that it's really almost summer!
I can't wait for a few months of complete laziness and no real "schedule" (well expcept for Julia who will still have EI, PT and OT). It's gonna be nice.
YAY!

Why Kids Rock (One Of The Many Reasons)
They bring home papers that say things like:
"My public sculpture would be a memorial to my Dad because he inspires me to be a hard worker. I would make it out of marble and keep it at my house."
~Emily~

Interesting
Not that I have any reason to believe that this will be the case with Julia (based on her developmental delays and her sisters history) but, Julia's pediatrician just called to tell me that he got the results of Julia's EEG and he said this:
"Fifteen percent of people that have an EEG have an abnormal one and have nothing wrong."
Doubtful that something like that would happen for Julia but hey, you never know right?

Dream
Lat night I had a dream.
I was looking out over a body of water (a small one) and I saw a deer lying in a clearing on the cliff across the water. Emily was up there with the deer, playing behind him, but it was obvious to me that she couldn't see the deer. I was waving and trying get her attention so she see could deer, but I was afraid that if I made too much noise, the deer would hear me and run away. The deer was lying there, looking peaceful and serene, almost majestic like. It was quite a site to behold. I clearly remember seeing the sun shine through the trees and reflecting off of the water.
While I was trying to get her attention, I heard a noise in the distant woods that were to my left. I looked over, and it appeared to be dark, or getting dark, almost like those last few moments before it turns completely black at night. The last streaks of pink were on the horizon, and running through the woods I saw the silohoutte of two coyotes. I briefly felt scared, thinking that they were close to Emily but then realized they were running away from her, and that she would be fine.
So of course, I went right online this morning to see what it meant to see a deer and coyotes in a dream.
Here is what I found.
Very often a single deer in the dream represents the qualities of your character like gentleness, tenderness, understanding and need for protection and safety. A deer also may represent a person dear to you, someone who is vulnerable and needs your help and protection at present time.
Dreaming of a coyote means that your are doomed or that a serious disaster lies ahead.
The deer thing struck me immediately. Emily's playing in the woods, just behind a deer? Obviously, she is going through something (all of the stuff I have been talking about) and needs my help to get her through it.
The coyote thing scared me for a minute, until I remembered they were running away from her, not to her...basically saying that "doom and disaster" are leaving the house.
It was an interesting dream, especially after I looked up the meaning.
I love it when I have dreams that when interpreted actually mean something good!

Emily's EEG...
...is scheduled for July 5th-7th. I wasn't aware that it would be a 2 day event but, I did get some explanation on the whole high does of valium thing.
Basically, she will need to be there sometime during the afternoon of July 5th. They will connect the leads to her head and the next morning, the doctor will read the results. If she has this ESES thing, the doctor will set her up with the high dose of valium, and read her results again the next morning. The valium should clear the EEG and she would most likely be sent home with a prescription for valium(a lower dose obviously). If the doctor reads the results the initial on the 6th and she does not have ESES, she can go home then (after I assume, what will be a conversation about what we will do for her to help with the moods and bedwetting (which has started up again...not the moods the bedwetting)).
So, next up will be scheduling the MRI and the neuropsychological testing, as well as a follow-up appointment with Dr. S, the director of the Multidisciplinary Tuberous Sclerosis Program at Children's.

OT
I have been meaning to blog about Julia's first appointment with the OT.
As soon as we pulled in the parking lot of Health South, Julia started saying "Debbie" and "ball" and "bubbles", fully expecting that we were going to see her PT. So, when Amy, who Julia has only met once walked out, Julia burst in to tears. I felt bad for Amy but she understood!
When we went back to the gym, Julia settled a little and played with some of the toys while Amy got the high chair and some snacks. During our initial visit she didn't really get to see Julia eat anything except cheerios. Julia was not all that cooperative, still thrown off a bit I think from her initial reaction to seeing Amy rather than Debbie. Amy took out some bubbles and started blowing them for Julia which settled her down briefly but she started up again when Amy wouldn't give her the full bottle of bubbles to dump out (that Amy, she's so mean...LOL). After a few minutes of an all out tantrum, we gave her some toys to play with and Amy showed me the NUK brush that I will be using on Julia, to help "wake her mouth up" just before meals.
I will be rubbing this on the insides of both cheeks, her tongue and on her palate, just behind her top front teeth.
Julia was so not excited about this when Amy demonstrated at our meeting but, I have done it a couple of times now and she appears to be getting used to it.
I also have to play "mouth games" with her (such as having her tap her mouth and say "ahhhh" as well as having me massage her cheeks).
I was talking to my aunt the other day and I said to her that I never in a million years new how much "work" this was going to be. I do mean work in the nicest of ways of course, because you all know I would do anything to help my children. It's such an unbelievable difference between a child who just does everything and a child who needs an extra push with just about everything that for most people just comes naturally. As I said to my aunt on the phone, "I have to teach my kid how to eat. It's just weird."
I am not sure if I am adequately expressing what I am thinking here. It's hard to explain really.
Anyway, I am very much looking forward to the day that I can give Julia something like corn on the cob or an apple and she will know to pick it up and bite it...or macaroni and cheese and she will know that she shouldn't just swallow it whole...or even a cracker and she will know that she should take the initial bite with her front teeth but then switch to the side for chewing, rather than just mashing it with her tongue so it gets soft enough to swallow.

Natural Therapy
The old me: get bad news, be all mopey and sad, hang around all day and do nothing.
The new me: get bad news, bitch about it on my blog, pack a picnic and go spend a couple of hours on the canal with my gorgeous daughter.

Stuff
I still don't have directions so I guess the Bug Day thing isn't happening (well at least not for Julia and I). I hope they don't think that I was just a no show. I guess they will get my email asking for directions eventually and realize.
In other news, I can't find my day planner. OK? I am having a breakdown over this of course, because, hello this is my day planner. It's like, literally, my life.
I just found out that Emily's neurologist in on vacation until next Monday. Of course, this would happen just when I really, really need him. I mean it's not like he planned it that way of course, but doesn't he know that this feeling in my stomach will not go away until Julia's EEG has been at least scheduled...and perhaps not even until after it takes place? Of course he doesn't know that I even have this feeling or that Julia needs another EEG since he hasn't actually seen the results yet but whatever.
I also would really like to get Emily's scheduled. I am not as worried about this (I already know her EEG is going to be abnormal and what it all means for her etc.) . I still though, for the sake of just knowing what I am doing when, and planning some sort of day care for Julia and Katherine while Emily is in, would like to get that underway as well.
I am probably an over emotional nutcase over all of this given the time of month but this is just all too much. I still (and I know this is all new) can not believe that any of it is happening.
I will be doing much better once this is all scheduled, done, and we have results (for both Emily and Julia). For me, knowing really is more than half of the battle. Once I know what I am dealing with I do what I need to do and that's that.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to just get this out of my head for awhile? I feel like I am walking around with a hammer in my head and the butterflies in my stomach. I was thinking I might go down to the waterfront with Julia today and just walk around in the fresh air, listen to water and boats etc. That might be relaxing.

Today
I am supposed to be going to a MOMS Club event called Bug Day this morning but so far, I haven't gotten the email with directtions to the person's house that is hosting. I don't know the address or I'd just get the directions myself and I don't have her phone number so I can't even call.
Oh well, we'll see what happens.
Today is Emily and Katherine's last class at Burtwood for the year and there recital is this Saturday. Emily has decided to switch to private voice lessons for next year and Katherine has decided to opt out of Burtwood altogether and play soccer. I am hoping to time Burtwood so that I don't have to pick anyone up from school which would just be fabulous.
Anyway, I really need to get my but in gear around here and get some housework and teacher gift making done. I may be back later, especially if I have any news regarding Julia or Emily and their overnight EEGS.

A week alone in Aruba wasn't happening so...
...I went over to my parents last night and got in the hot tub instead.
It's was a great means of escape, although, I am thinking the Aruba thing may have been better!
LOL.

Touch a Truck
My sister Heather and I took the kids to the Middleboro PTA sponsored Touch a Truck event yesterday. Here are some of the pictures I took!
Today
Julia has her first appointment with the occupational therapist today. She has PT immediately following. I was a little nervous about this because I wasn't sure how she would be with two hours of "therapy" in a row but, I think she will be fine. This will be our first time having both appointments in a row, so, if it doesn't seem like it will be a good thing, I will just change it up.
After we get home, I am going to tackle the laundry and hopefully, be able to continue with the teacher gifts I am making for the end of the year.
Tonight: Falcon Beach and Bed.

Perpective Is Everything, Huh?
When I look at a patch of dandelions, I see a bunch of weeds that are going
to take over my yard.
My kids see flowers for Mom and blowing white fluff you can wish on.
When I look at an old drunk and he smiles at me, I see a smelly, dirty
person who probably wants money and I look away.
My kids see someone smiling at them and they smile back.
When I hear music I love, I know I can't carry a tune and don't have much
rhythm so I sit self-consciously and listen.
My kids feel the beat and move to it. They sing out the words. If they don't
know them, they make up their own.
When I feel wind on my face, I brace myself against it. I feel it messing up
my hair and pulling me back when I walk.
My kids close their eyes, spread their arms and fly with it, until they fall
to the ground laughing.
When I pray, I say thee and thou and grant me this, give me that.
My kids say, "Hi God! Thanks for my toys and my friends. Please keep the bad
dreams away tonight. Sorry, I don't want to go to Heaven yet. I would miss
my Mommy and Daddy."
When I see a mud puddle I step around it. I see muddy shoes and dirty
carpets.

Freakily Accurate Test
Your Brain's Pattern |
Your mind is a creative hotbed of artistic talent. You're always making pictures in your mind, especially when you're bored. You are easily inspired to think colorful, interesting thoughts. And although it may be hard to express these thoughts, it won't always be. |
Right on.
Ok, in a freaky example of how accurate these silly tests may be, I decided to have Ryun, Emily, and Katherine come in separately and pick their favorite images.
Emily and Ryun picked this:
Your Brain's Pattern |
Structured and organized, you have a knack for thinking clearly. You are very logical - and you don't let your thoughts get polluted with emotions. And while your thoughts are pretty serious, they're anything from boring. It's minds like yours that have built the great cities of the world! |
Katherine picked the same one as I did.
I'll be damned if this doesn't prove what I have always thought:
Emily is just like Ryun.
Katherine is just like me.
I'll be interested to see, if this test is still around, what Julia will pick when she is older.
Test lifted from Jay.
The Results
Julia's doctor just called with the results of her EEG.
They were abnormal.
She had what the doctor called a "midline parietal spike." The results said possible complex partial seizures.
For those who may not remember this is the reason we did the EEG to begin with (well, that and because of Emily's history). While that hasn't been happening as frequently as it was, it has happened a number of times since then.
So, the next step?
Julia's developmental pediatrician is going to contact Emily's neurologist so that he may review the results. Conveniently, they are both on staff at Children's and know each other well. She thinks that he will more than likely schedule an overnight EEG for Julia, as it appears that her seizures (well seizure activity) is potentiated by sleep, just like Emily's (the spike occured during the portion of the EEG in which Julia was asleep).
Obviously, for the sake of convenience, I am going to try my darndest to get Emily and Julia's EEG scheduled on the same night. Two kids at Children's at the same time! Oh fun!
When I first got this news the morning, I promptly started to cry. I've stopped now and am trying desperately to wrap my head around the fact that I now have two children with seizures (well, more than likely anyway).
It's funny, well not really but you know what I mean. Remember when I posted about canceling the EEG because I knew everything was fine? Murphy's Law and all that.
Guess it's a good thing I didn't.
Also, as much as it is important to know, and in a sense it is nice to finally have some definable answers as to what has been going on with Julia, sometimes, I still wish I wasn't so on top of things.

And the award for worst parking lot goes to...
...HANNAFORD MIDDLEBORO!
I hate backing out of a spot in that lot, particularly right in front of Hannaford itself. The spaces are too close together, the lane is just barely wide enough for two cars to pass, and there isn't enough distance between the lot and the building itself.
Anyone else who has been there...do you agree?

So...
...I spent about an hour last night and another good chunk of time this morning cleaning up bodily fluids! Oh what fun!
Katherine's got it one way, Julia's got it the other, and Ryun has a weak stomach for this type of thing. So you know, it's super mom/wife to the rescue.
Anyway, neither child has gotten sick again so that's good.
I spent the day yesterday at the zoo with Katherine's class. I had Katherine and two other girls with me and for the most part, they were all very well behaved. I had to keep telling one girl not to run but other than that. I got some big bonus points when I took them to the playground just outside of the zoo and was even told on the way out that I was the "best grownup ever." Gotta love kids! I took some pictures that I tried to get printed yesterday but CVS sucks and their machine was broken. I really need to get a refill for my photo printer and go back to doing this at home. This is not the first time I have had this problem with CVS.
I went to the crop at the club last night and while I was able to finish one project and start and complete another, I forgot to bring the one thing that I was really looking forward to working on. So, I ended up leaving about a half of an hour early because I ran out of things to do. It was fun though and Kelly did bring those yummy oatmeal cookies...
Emily's overnight camping ended up being cancelled. I found out early in the morning that it wasn't happening but I didn't want her to go off to school upset so I waited until she got home to tell her. I was bracing myself for what I thought was going to be something similar to the fires of hell burning me alive but, she took it remarkably well, just another sign that the med changes are really working.
Anyway, I am headed out in a few to get something I need for dinner and then I am hoping to spend the rest of the afternoon organizing the office!

False Advertising
This morning, Julia's diaper leaked and I asked Emily to grab me a fresh one off of the counter.
She came back over and said, "I guess the package of diapers lied. It says "leakguard protection."
What I thought of saying was, "It's called false advertising, Emily. Unfortunately, there's a lot of that in this world."
Heh.
I figured that may be beyond her scope (and lead to a million other questions)though so, instead I said, "Yeah, I guess it did."

Finding What Works
As mentioned previously,I have noticed some very positive changes in Emily's behavior. I have told her as much on a number of occasions and I think she is really happy with the positive feedback.
Last week sometime she asked me if she could have my old digital camera, once we got the new one. I told her that I would really have to think about that and that I needed to see some responsibility shown with the things she already has for me to even consider it (she is not known for her organization skills and often, things are broken or ruined by her lack of care or concern for her toys etc). I also told her that giving her a camera would be a wonderful reward for her if she showed more positive changes in her behavior, and kept up with the good work she was already doing.
The other day, something happened, and for the life of me I can't remember exactly what right now, but her reaction was so "not what we have been seeing" that I said, "Wow Emily, that was awesome! I am so proud of you and the changes you are making." She said, "Well, I really want that camera."
After all we have tried, all we have not tried, the fights, the tears, the "OMG I am going crazy" moments, it's a digital camera that's done the trick (along with the increase in the Lamictal). Who'd have ever guessed? I made sure to explain to her that if she does get the camera, that the changes have to continue beyond the day she gets it, or it could just as easily be taken away.
I also need to find a way of explaining that good behavior is not always going to be rewarded with high end electronics...you know like the MP3 player she's been begging for. I suspect that she is however, getting beyond the point of getting a sticker as a reward. LOL.

The EEG
It was a little hairy getting the leads on her head, and it required me to hold her head and my sister to hold her body, but the tech managed to get them on...and in the right place too. Julia was not a happy camper (to put it mildly) but due to the fact that she was so tired and had worked herself up in to a good frenzy, she had no energy left to protest, the last half of the leads were put on with little or no fight from Julia.
She fell asleep (like she was supposed to) after about 10 minutes and then we had to wake her up about 15-20 minutes later. She was a little upset about this but, when the tech started doing this flashy light thingy at her, she started to laugh.
Taking the leads off was a much more pleasant experience then putting them on. She basically got a nice head massage with this funky oil stuff that takes the glue off and sat there talking and smiling the whole time.
Unrelated to the actual EEG, I was impressed with the time we made, considering that we could barely see two feet in front of us due to the rain. The appointment was at 12:30 and, anticipating that due to weather and just the mere fact that we were driving in to town that there would be traffic, we left at about 10:45. We got there in an hour so we had time to kill, which was nice.
Also, we stopped for lunch at Red Robin in Plymouth and while we were waiting for our food to be delivered, the waiter came over with an overflowing mug of some kind of oreo icecream thing that we didn't order and said, "This is from a secret admirer." He wasn't clear about whether or not it was for my sister or I but I am guessing it had to be my sister because, hello, I am married and I can't have secret admirers. Well maybe I can but still... it was just...weird. Of course, it could have been for Julia because you have to admit, she is pretty stinkin' cute and quite worthy of many secret admirers. She ended up eating/drinking most of the shake anyway.
So you know, my sister and I spent the rest of the time looking around the restaurant, trying to figure out who the heck it was, but we had no luck. It was the first time anything like that had ever happened to either of us and regardless of who it was meant for, it was rather flattering, and made for quite an interesting lunch/dinner!
Katherine...
...is better today and no one else is sick! YAY!
My sister, Julia and I are off to Boston for Julia's EEG this afternoon. I had thought abuot cancelling it to be honest because I just know that everything is fine but I didn't want to jinx it (as in cancel it and find out something really is wrong that the EEG could have found) so, we will be leaving shortly.
The weather sucks for driving in to Boston but my job is keeping Julia awake (it's a sleep deprived EEG so I had to get her up early and can't let her sleep until she gets there). Heather is driving us in.
I should be back probably early evening so I will be back to update you all then!

As it always seems to go...
...I spoke too soon. Katherine is oficially sick and not hypoglycemic.
Let's all say a quick prayer that no one else in the family gets it, ok?
Thanks!

Still Busy
Katherine is home with me today, after she woke up complaining that her stomach hurt and, well, let's just say she wasn't lying. She is better now so I am beginning to think she may have been hypoglycemic (which actually can cause vomiting). She is acting like her regular old self at this point so it doesn't seem like she is really sick, but we will see. I didn't notice the typical fruity, medicinal smell on her breath that is generally present when her sugar is low but that doesn't mean that she wasn't.
I am in the midst of an enormous scrapbooking project and it has taken up quite a bit of time. That culminated with my everyday "work" with Julia (PT, OT) hasn't left much time for blogging.
I have an appointment tonight.
Julia has her EEG tomorrow.
I have food shopping and a meeting on Thursday.
I am going to the zoo with Katherine's class on Friday and going to a crop at the Mitchell Club on Friday.
So, I expect that blogging will indeed be light over the next few days.

Historic Plymouth
This was taken atop the hill where the cannons were, looking down over the 1627 village. You can see the ocean in the background.
I said to Emily, "Hey Em, look at the goats!" She promptly corrected me by saying, "Mom, there called livestock." Ahem.
And finally, here's Emily standing on the dock after we got of the Mayflower.
I did take quite a few more pictures, which I will probably post to Shutterfly at some point. I just picked the best of the best for you all here.
