Sgt. Damon

Homes For Our Troops is a non-profit organization that specializes in providing accesible homes for our most severely wounded veterans. The organization was founded in Taunton, MA by John Gonsalves, who now serves as President.

Homes For Our Troops has been recognized by the Presidet of the United States, many federal and state government officials, and on national television, making two appearances on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

One of the veterans that the Homes For Our Troops organization helped was Sgt. Peter Damon. Sgt. Damon lost both arms in the war. Homes For Our Troops built Sgt. Damon and his family home right here in South Middleboro, which was completed in 2005.

This morning, while reading the local paper, I came across an article about Sgt. Damn and his plans to restore and old storefront downtown, and turn it in to an art gallery. The gallery will showcase his own work, as well as the work of other local artists and will also have a display set up with art work that is for sale.

Sgt. Damon receives a government pension, and benefited from a lump sum payment to service people in Iraq or Afghanistan that are injured in combat. As a result of these benefits, as well as the fact that all housing materials from the wood used to construct the house, right down to the kitchen sink are donated so that the veterans have no mortgage, the Damons were able to buy and are in the process of restoring the 19th century store front property.

In his own words, Sgt. Damon said in the article, "I didn't have to go back to work, but I wanted to. I couldn't see sitting around, but I knew I had to work for myself. Certain times of the day I have to sit. I get tired easy, and that would make it hard to work for someone else."

What an inspritation he is! Seriously, when you think about all he has been through, all he has literally sacrificed for his country, to have such a postive attitude and use it to make your dreams come true is just awesome.
